What to do with napkin after the meal

After a meal. I am unsure of how to handle the used napkin. Does one leave it on the table or chair , folded or slightly crumpled? What is the correct process?

Napkin Placement

When the meal is finished and you do not expect to be served any more food, fold your napkin neatly and put in on the table.

If you leave the table during the meal and know you will be returning, put your napkin on your chair without folding it.

Having said all of this, if you are using paper napkins this can be challenging!
