Monica,

A gift may not even be appropriate depending upon the circumstances. Are you going to their home for a meal? Then a small hostess type gift is a nice gesture. Are you meeting in a restaurant? Are they hosting? A thank you note following this kind of event is appropriate, but no gift is necessary. Is your son hosting, etc? I hope this helps a bit.
