Should I invite my boss to my department BBQ?

Hello. I work in a department with about 30 employees. More than half the employees work directly for me. I am trying to help build employee morale and want to put on a BBQ at my house for those employees that work under me. My boss is a good person and gets along well with all the employees. Since I am not inviting the entire department I want to know what the proper etiquette for inviting my boss would be in this situation.

Hello Jay,

Your boss should not be expecting an invitation because of the purpose of the gathering. Not including him won't break any rules of etiquette while your employees will most likely be more comfortable.
