Ms. Judy C. Day

I really would like an answer to this issue which keeps coming up - If I have a guests or as most recently happened at Thanksgiving guests who crashed at our home thought it okay to bring their dogs in to stay as well. Of course they cleaned up after them but when I sit on the carpet I know they used it. I have never allowed pets because of fleas, being licked, etc. or smoking inside my home.

Also, at a summer party some other family members brought large dogs and they chased our cat up a tree and I guess I was lucky they did not decide to bring these large dogs in the house. Is it now just assumed that if you invite someone you are also inviting their pets? Please let me know your opinion. I know I am getting older and want to keep up with what is acceptable these days.

Party Crashers
by: Ms P Etiquette

Dear Ms Day~

Oh my!! It is never proper to be a party crasher whether you are human or canine. Both require an invitation!

You man state "no pets" on your invitation or deliver this verbally when you invite over the telephone. If anyone shows up with dogs, ask them to leave their pet in the car so they do not disrupt the other guests or the dinner itself. Many people are allergic to pet dander, making pet visits dangerous to their health. There are also those who fear dogs and will be so uncomfortable. Make your wishes known to all guests. You have a right to decide who comes into your home.

Good luck!
