Mother giving daughter-in-law a baby shower improper etiquette?

by Mom
(Texas)

Is it in poor taste for a mother to give her daughter-in-law a baby shower? Daughter-in-law and all invited live locally.

I was told that the closest relative to host a shower would be an aunt (except in extenuating circumstances ie. daughter-in-law lives in foreign country, visiting briefly) or risk being perceived as one with poor etiquette (desperate, 'money-grubbing', etc).

Baby Shower Etiquette

Dear Mom,

Thanks for this easy questions for once! It is not poor etiquette for the mother-in-law to host a baby shower for her son's wife. In fact, frequently both grandmothers to be will co-host. It is a joyous event, filled with happy expectations by both families.

I am a little confused about your money-grubbing comment. If anyone so perceives this event, she should not attend the shower. That way she cannot feel "tricked" into gift giving. Remember, if one receives an invitation, there is always the option of declining to attend.
