Graduation gift giving

When invited to a single graduation party held to honor two high school graduates, is the invited party obliged to give a gift to both graduates even though they only know one of the grads?

Dear Lynn,

You are never obligated to give a gift. However if you wish to do so, it is a lovely gesture to give a gift to a friend or relative commemorating a fine event like a graduation. Since you do not know the other graduate, a card with a sincere personal note should be appreciated by the recipient.
