Am I obligated to buy a gift for my nieces MBA graduation. There is no party and I've already given her a gift for her college graduation

One is never obligated to give a gift, especially when one feels put upon. Gift giving must be from the heart, a sign of generosity and caring to the recipient. I know we all feel gift giving is necessary in some situations, but expecting a gift is poor etiquette.


A congratulatory card acknowledging the momentous achievement is sufficient. Since this is a family member, I believe that is acceptable etiquette.
