Over the holiday...my niece got mad that I did not invite her mother(my former sister-in-law) to my holiday party. I told her it was not polite to ask if she was on the invite list...when she knew I had not invited her. Was I wrong by telling my niece she was worng?

Holiday Party
by: Ms P Etiquette

Hello Diane,

Your question reads like a soap opera!! If I am reading this correctly, you did not invite your former sister-in-law to your holiday party when apparently you invited other family members. The daughter of the uninvited relative was unhappy at the slight. There must be some old feelings surfacing among the three of you that aroused a bit of a confrontation. Out of this, you wonder if it was appropriate for your niece to ask if her mother's name was on your list of invited guests. From my perspective, the inquiry was not inappropriate. It would be poor manners to ask in front of other guests and/or make a fuss when others were present but acceptable if done privately.

I do hope this helps.
