Is it appropiate for your husband's father to invite my husband's ex-girlfriend who is his first son's mother to his grandmother's birthday dinner.

Hi Trina,

Thank you for your question. I believe you need to take a step back and evaluate under what circumstances the invitation was extended. I do not believe this is a referendum on you or your marriage, but the desire by your husband's father to have all of the grandchildren, and therefore all of the family intact. If the son lives with his mother, there is no tactful way to invite the son and not the mother.

Although you may feel awkward about this, imagine how the ex-girlfriend must feel. The important thing with this type of event is that everyone feel comfortable and have an enjoyable time and ensure that grandmother's party is a happy one. You will be the important person in assuring that happens. The intentions were good, but in today's complex families, execution can be awkward. Try to be the one to make things right.
